Air Companions in the Bangor Daily News

My mom and her business Air Companions are in a front page feature article in the Maine statewide newspaper Bangor Daily News.  Congratulations!  What an amazing blessing!

Here is the article and a link to the article here where you can also see the video.

WARREN, Maine — When Sonja Burns’ 80-year-old grandmother tripped and fell down the length of an escalator while flying by herself to Florida to visit old friends, she didn’t break any bones or suffer any obvious physical injuries.

But the accident still had far-reaching consequences for her and her family.

“When you’re an older person, and you have a traumatic event like that, it does something to you,” Burns said recently from her Warren home. “It did something to her. She started to go downhill.”

Her grandmother was never the same again — and neither was Burns, a licensed practical nurse with decades of experience helping people, including caring for people with special needs in her home. That tough airport experience planted the seeds of an idea for Burns’ business, Air Companions Inc.

Through the service, she will travel with the elderly, the disabled, the impaired, those who are afraid of flying and those who need medical attention. Her motto is, “We are your guardian angels in the air,” and she is committed to making sure vulnerable people get to where they are going safely and with dignity. Although the business has already provided her with challenges including an earthquake, she loves what she does.

“I just like the adventure of it. I like the whole thing, the challenge of it,” Burns said. “Meeting a stranger and having them trust me. Them being happy with my service. I just like it — it’s fun for me. Not to say it never gets stressful!”

In fact, the first trip she made with Air Companions, back in 2010, posed a major challenge when no one realized that the elderly, ill woman in Florida she was taking back home to Maine had no photo identification until she got to the airport.

“When you’re elderly, you stop driving. You no longer have a picture ID,” Burns said, adding that she’s grateful it happened at a small airport in the south, with a very kind-hearted staff.

“The security people were outstandingly wonderful,” she said. “They let her go, but I learned a valuable lesson.”

That’s a lesson that’s come in handy — other elderly folks she has since escorted also have not had valid photo identification, but it’s now on Burns’ checklist to make sure they do before they fly.

Another, more complicated journey happened when Burns was hired in 2010 to safely escort an elderly couple from an Illinois nursing home to Maine to be close to their daughter. Both suffered from dementia, and the husband also was wheelchair bound and ill with Parkinson’s disease.

“It was very difficult,” Burns said. “Any sicker, and I couldn’t have brought them home on a commercial plane.”

But with her husband’s help, she did it.

“We brought them home,” she said.

Valerie Taylor of Freeport was the daughter, and she said this week that she highly recommends Burns and Air Companions to safely bring loved ones to their destinations.

“She did a great job,” Taylor said, adding that her parents both passed away not long after their trip home. “She was very respectful, tender and treated them with dignity. At the same time, she saw to their needs and delivered them safely into my hands.”

Because Burns is a nurse, she was able to administer medication to her mother, which gave the family peace of mind.

“Much like a friend and a nurse — it was a nice balance,” Taylor said.

Another of Burns’ clients is a woman with Down syndrome who lives in a San Jose group home and needed to travel east to visit her brother in Washington, D.C.

“She was a very nice lady. I liked her a lot,” Burns said.

The two were sitting in the plane on the tarmac near the capital last summer when the 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit, causing the airport to close.

“We sat on the plane for an extra hour,” she said. “Rose and I just had a good time.”

She credits some of her ease with problem solving and organizing to years of being a single mother before remarrying.

“Mothers have to do everything,” Burns said. “Think on their feet. Deal with emergencies.”

She said that hers is one of the country’s few businesses concentrating on helping people travel safely. There is another in Atlanta.

“There’s not a lot of people who do it,” Burns said.

Because she is still building Air Companions, she is willing to negotiate prices with her clients, who must pay for all her own traveling expenses on the job and a basic rate of $50 per hour when she is with a traveler. When she’s not with the traveler, she charges $250 for a day of traveling to where she’s going.

“If they rented a special plane, it would be tens of thousands of dollars,” Burns said. “Even though I’m not cheap, [my services are] way less expensive than that.”

Taylor said Burns helped her work out the different possibilities for bringing her parents home.

“She did all the legwork and information gathering, and gave me options,” she said. “It worked out very well.”

That’s Burns’ goal.

“I just was born to be a caregiver, that’s all,” she said.

Henry…

Super Naughty!  I mean that with great affection and love!

Passed the Glucose Test

We have had a rollercoaster of a day.  Mostly due to a three year old’s tiredness, allergies and his pregnant mom!  Henry entertained the waiting room at the doctor’s office until my name was called, got to play the doctor and find the baby’s heartbeat and topped it all off with a full blown toddler tantrum as I was scheduling my next appointment on my way out.  It included lying on his back, kicking, hitting and yelling.  It was not the high point of our time there.  Or anyone else’s, I am sure.  I chalked it up to being overtired and struggling with seasonal allergies and probably just being a normal three year old demanding his own way.

I was glad he had so much fun playing the doctor and that I passed all my blood tests for the third trimester with flying colors.  Praise God!

I am praying for wisdom daily with which battles to fight with a strong willed tike.  Want to balance keeping authority without losing my mind (haha – it’s already gone) – I mean without always seeming to be nagging on him or correcting all the time.  I guess that’s the struggle of every parent!

Our day got progressively worse with attitude and sometimes punishment seems to be more punishment on me which is another joyous part of the parental journey!

Good thing God makes three year olds extra charming and cute.

3 Year Old Check Up

DSC_1183.jpg

This little nugget has a spring in his step!

Sunday night we went to church in the evening.  It was so encouraging.  Really a hallmark message.  There’s an introduction that is good and then the main message.  You can listen here.

We got home and we put the nugget to bed after a snack and gave him some medicine for some relief from his seasonal allergies.

I have to confess I was quite tired which I have been pretty regularly over the last couple of weeks.  I was thoroughly enjoying some down time after mr. man went to bed.  I fell asleep for about an hour and woke up to the nugget coughing and crying.  We seem to be in a seasonal allergy cycle with him.  He was able to fall back to sleep after a while but then I was pumped up and my mind was racing.  Needless to say BOTH of us were dragging yesterday!

After doing morning chores yesterday, we rushed to an overcrowded waiting room for Henry’s 3 year check up.  I mean there were people on the floor!  Note to self: don’t schedule appointments for public school spring break!

Henry LOVED his check up.  He told the doctor it was his turn after the doctor finished his exam.  The doctor got quite a charge out of him.

The nugget got rave reviews this year which is always music to a mom’s ears.  Last year his growth had decreased significantly.  He had chronic diarrhea and constipation.  The doctor was concerned and asked me to bring him back in 6 months.  I knew in my gut something was affecting him and it was a very difficult time for me.  I didn’t want to go down some type of drug route or through extensive medical exams that led to nothing.  I had watched Henry’s digestive system struggle, his skin get worse, his sleeping patterns were horrible and his previous doctor thought he was borderline asthmatic.  His previous doctor also thought this was all allergy related.  I made the decision to take Henry to a naturopath.  He and I both had a scan and tested very high in a gluten, casein (protein in dairy) and beef intolerance.  We are coming close to a year with eliminating these from our diets although at times they have been accidentally eaten by Henry and on purpose by me!  Henry’s growth has increased, his sleeping pattern has done a 180.  His skin has been almost clear for a few months now (it takes a long time for candida overgrowth to get under control).  Soon after the switch he had solid bowel movements on a regular basis for the first time ever and has not struggled with constipation once.

I am so thankful for his exam yesterday and we both managed to push through the day.  The doctor said his seasonal allergies will be a struggle off and on for the next two months.  Henry and I did sleep through the night last night and today we have a check up for baby brother!

Annie in London to Annie in Chicago!

I am so excited for my cousin Annie and her husband Pete who will soon be home owners in the mid west!  Within two weeks they moved across the ocean, settled into work and found a home!  Way to go.  I stole the photo above from breaking into Annie’s Photobucket.  I have mild kitchen envy Winking smile.  Actually, I am just so happy for them and continue to pray for a smooth process through closing because we all know how nerve-racking those days are!

I would definitely be growing some herbs in that window!

Do you see this backyard?  I love it!!  I especially love the fantastic playhouse which was better featured in the listing but I can’t find those photos and Annie and Pete are getting rid of it anyway.  I love these tiered decks!  So cool.

Their soon-to-be-home is called a tri-level I believe.  I love the red door and the landscaping.  Such a great house!

One plus about the timing of the purchase is the yard cleanup is already done along with landscaping maintenance – mulching etc.
